Trees and canopy are different measurements

Halifax tree inventory and historical canopy

Explore historical canopy shapes by community, published canopy percentages by census area and recorded tree assets. Each layer measures something different and carries its own dates and limitations.

Community canopy maps and downloads

Explore the canopy shapes themselves, grouped by the source GSA community name. These differ from the census boundaries shaded by percentage in the separate census layer. The catalog preserves all 235 grouped source records across 203 communities; no polygon is counted as an individual tree.

Historical overview, with small details omitted

Patches under 1,000 m² are omitted, gaps under 1,000 m² are filled, and edges are simplified. Use the original HRM data for detailed GIS analysis. These shapes do not show individual trees, property boundaries or current canopy.

203 communities match. Choose a community and load its first section. Canopy geometry and map tiles are not downloaded initially.

Historical canopy inputs: rural 2017–2018; urban 2019–2022. Census boundaries and demographics: 2021. Priority index ranges from 0 to 1; higher means greater inequity. It is not a tree-removal risk or permission score.

How to read the historical canopy layers

Rural inputs cover 2017–2018 and urban inputs 2019–2022. The urban update accounts for removals without measuring intervening growth; deciduous areas can be underestimated. The census-area polygons are shaded by the published canopy percentage; the community maps show generalized historical canopy outlines. Neither layer identifies individual tree crowns. The equity index combines historical canopy with 2021 census context.

Some source area and percentage values do not reconcile exactly after unit conversion. The explorer preserves the published percentage and flags those records rather than silently recalculating it. It does not claim a current canopy-loss rate or a comparable annual trend.
